HST Publication Statistics

Annual publication statistics for papers using Hubble Space Telescope data are in the chart below.  [N.B.: for current year papers, search the STEPsheet interface.]

Chart notes:
Ref = Refereed papers, i.e. papers in a refereed publication 
Unref = Unrefereed papers, i.e. papers in meeting proceedings or other unrefereed publications.  

Hotlinks are available for the overall totals for each instrument and individual instrument lists are in chronological order so that papers for specific years may be seen.  Annual totals do not equal sum of individual figures, since many papers use more than one instrument. 

Notes on database content:
1991-2001: first publication of HST data by GO, GTO, or archive user
2002 forward: follow-up papers authored by member(s) of original publishing team added
Late 2003 forward: inclusion criteria expanded again to include any papers that use HST data (excluded are papers just quoting previously published papers or using single images as finding charts)
These three inclusion categories are searchable in the full STEPsheet as CAT-1, CAT-2, and CAT-3 respectively. There are also a few CAT-4 papers representing reviews based on HST papers.
